History and Release Date
The Casio G-Shock was introduced in April 1983 after a visionary quest by engineer Kikuo Ibe, who sought to create a watch so durable it could survive rough knocks and drops without damage. Inspired by a personal experience when his mechanical watch fell and shattered, Ibe assembled “Team Tough” in 1981 to develop a watch with “Triple 10” criteria: a 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance (100 meters), and the ability to withstand a 10-meter drop. After over 200 prototypes and inspired by the shock absorption of a bouncing rubber ball, they succeeded in creating the first model, the DW-5000C.
What Makes It Iconic
Revolutionary Shock Resistance: Featuring a “floating module” design that suspends the internal mechanism within a protective urethane foam cradle, layered with multiple shock-absorbent materials.
Durability and Water Resistance: Built to withstand harsh physical conditions making it ideal for military, sports, outdoor activities, and industrial environments.
Long Battery Life and Versatility: Durable battery and multi-function digital features like alarms, timers, chronographs, and backlighting.
Bold Design Language: Distinctive chunky, rugged look with a rectangular digital display and durable resin case and strap.
Enduring Popularity: A cultural icon worldwide with appeal among athletes, military personnel, adventurers, and fashion trendsetters alike.
